'Addams' retools for road

'The Addams Family'TORONTO -- After opening to frightening reviews in Chicago last year and worse ones in Gotham this year, legiters may have expected individuals behind Broadway musical "The Addams Family" to shut the crypt door silently and disappear into oblivion.Rather, the creative team made like Dr. Frankenstein and overhauled the piece completely before starting it on the highway in September. The surprising result: It's alive. And also the show's unusual publish-Rialto transformation reps an growing understanding among legit producers that the Primary Stem production does not need to function as a show's final cut."Nowadays Broadway is the start of your way, not the finish," states "Addams" producer Stuart Oken. "We'd an entire world available to determine 'The Addams Family,' so why wouldn't you allow it to be right?""The Addams Family 3.," as Windy City producer Oken of Elephant Eye Theatrical now calls it, continues to be garnering upbeat reviews and solid business, with dates reserved through next summer time and plans for worldwide versions around australia, South america and elsewhere falling nicely into position. This time around around, a dark tone struck through the experts is better taken inside a line from Judith Newmark's review within the St. Louis Publish-Dispatch: "Could it be a masterpiece? No. But it is appealing entertainment."It's known for publish-Broadway rejiggering to happen. Effective longrunners including "Wicked" and "The Lion King," for example, have fixed worrying creative issues in road versions, using the changes subsequently labored in towards the Primary Stem original. The tour of "Legally Blonde," meanwhile, went having a largely remodeled physical production that demonstrated much more sustainable compared to more expensive Broadway draft."Addams," however, sticks out for that extensive character from the creative work carried out within the wake of their Broadway debut. The storyline was overhauled utilizing a new plot element -- patriarch Gomez laying to wife Morticia over their daughter's impending marriage -- like a motor they are driving things forward. Composer Andrew Lippa emerged with new tunes, while Jerry Zaks helmed on your own. A brand new cast, brought by Douglas Sills ("The Scarlet Pimpernel") and Sara Gettelfinger ("Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"), now toys for lightness and charm."Everybody was onboard with the concept we'd a genuine chance on the path to finally finish what we should had began," Zaks states.Oken now confesses he initially come up with a number of elements that seemed good individually, but never really gelled.Obtaining the "Jersey Boys" team of Marshall Brickman and Ron Elise to create it appeared wise, as did the option of composer-lyricist Lippa ("The Wild Party"), "Memphis" choreographer Sergio Trujillo and stars Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth as Gomez and Morticia. He arrived at into left area to choose the indie-minded director-designer team accountable for "Shockheaded Peter," Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch, to become the creative leaders from the production. The matchmaking did not pan out.In Chicago, Oken states, "Everything deteriorated within the final stages of testing, and also the best we're able to do prior to the opening was keep our heads above water." The end result, which bowed in Chi in November 2009, demonstrated an unusual hybrid: part Medieval spectacle, part old-school musical.Dismissive notices almost sank them, however the producers rallied and contacted Zaks, who had labored formerly with Lane ("Men and Dolls," "An Interesting Factor Happened in order to the Forum"). The director also had a recognised status like a show physician ("Smokey Joe's Coffee shop"), using the Broadway retooling of "Sister Act" among his newer credits. The primary creative obstacle to beat, based on creatives, was the first option to tell a brand new story in line with the Addams cartoons, as opposed to the property's subsequent iterations around the tube or even the bigscreen."We learned very rapidly the audience wanted the things they appreciated, not newer and more effective undertake the fabric,Inch Trujillo states. "And that we did not possess the time to adjust it how they wanted."Adds Oken: "You receive in to the stress of entering Broadway and it is a really tough, painful experience, especially when you are aware you are not ready."Even though show's April 2010 opening introduced largely nasty reviews, the benefit of the initial material stored drawing folks -- and motivated they allow it another try."The Addams Family" shuts 12 ,. 31 around the Rialto after 750 perfs. It in all probability will not recoup -- but producers are wishing the retooled road version helps the title earn its keep. Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

Survivors Richard Hatch Seeks Show On His Kids From Sperm Donations

First Published: December 13, 2011 6:32 PM EST Credit: NBC NEWPORT, R.I. -- Caption Richard Hatch in his cast shot for The Celebrity Apprentice, 2011Reality star Richard Hatch, who was freed this week from prison on a tax evasion sentence tied to his $1 million Survivor winnings, said Tuesday that he is hoping for a new reality show about his relationship with the children conceived from his sperm donations. Hatch, 50, was released Monday from prison for violating the terms of his supervised release in the long-running case. Hatch maintains his innocence and says he does not owe money to the Internal Revenue Service. Here I am, subjected to something that can only be described as institutionalized bullying, said Hatch, who spent nine months in prisons in five states. Hatch won the inaugural season of the show in 2000. He was convicted in 2006 of two counts of attempted tax evasion and one count of signing a false tax return. He was released from prison in 2009 but ordered to return after a federal judge ruled he failed to file amended income tax returns for 2000 and 2001. Shortly before returning to prison in March, Hatch, who lives in Rhode Island, said he met a 22-year-old biological son who is living in New Jersey. Hatch said he met the man, whom he identified only as Devin, through the Sibling Donor Registry, which helps connect donors and children. They took a DNA test to confirm their genetic ties, he said. Hatch said another biological child, whom he identified as a 22-year-old Maine woman named Emily, visited him in prison. It was additionally challenging to be wrongfully imprisoned knowing that these children were coming forward, Hatch said. I told the court that beforehand. I explained this is a fascinating time in my life when I was at a place where I wanted to get to know these people who are my children who have come forward and want to get to know me. He also views the show as a way to help the public understand the relationships between offspring and donors. The offspring want connections with their biological donors because of all kinds of varying reasons from health to emotional to whatever they are, said Hatch. Hatch said a production company was involved in plans for a TV series about his encounters with his children but that no plans have been finalized. He declined to name the production company. Hatch also has an adopted son, who attends the University of Rhode Island. Hatchs discovery is one of the most interesting encountered by Wendy Kramer, executive director and co-founder of the Sibling Donor Registry. Kramer said shes known Hatch for years and that they have discussed working on a television project. Hatch said he has no regrets about participating in Survivor and would like to compete in The Amazing Race, which also airs on CBS. Hatch remains on supervised release for the next two years and two months. Under the terms of his release, Hatch must pay 25 percent of his gross income to the IRS to pay off his taxes for 2000 and 2001, court records show. He also cannot leave the country without court permission. Hatch said the travel restriction means he is not free to visit his spouse, who lives in Argentina. Hatch, who is gay, said he married eight years ago in Nova Scotia. He asserts any taxes owed on his $1 million Survivor prize aredue to the government in Malaysia, where the series was filmed. Hatch also says its up to CBS or the shows production company to pay any tax bills. A CBS spokeswoman did not immediately return a request for comment Tuesday. Federal prosecutors said the IRS calculated Hatch owed $1.7 million in taxes, penalties and interest as of April 2010, which Hatch disputed. Never has a cent been determined to be due, he said. But the court has examined the evidence in Hatchs case numerous times and determined he has not paid taxes that he owes, said Jim Martin, a spokesman for Rhode Island U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha. The U.S. Tax Court is also reviewing Hatchs case. Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

ON HOW HE GOT THE NUDE PHOTOS: "That was her idea," says Stern, who had brought a number of transparent scarves as accessories. "She could see they were transparents so she asked her hairdresser what he thought of doing nudes and he thought that would be a good idea. I didn't know what was going to happen." ON WHAT MOTIVATED HER TO POSE NUDE: It was "absolutely" calculated says Stern. "She had just had a divorce from Arthur Miller, she'd lost the movie Something's Gotta Give. I thought it was the only time in her life I could approach her. I had thought of it but I didn't think she would do it." At the time, Monroe was jealous of the huge amount of public attention Taylor was receiving. "Taylor was much more stoic for a portrait subject. Marilyn was a free spirit." What was my premise? She just made little comments." ON WHY HE HASN'T READ MAILER'S BOOK: "I read a few pages. I'm not a big reader," admits the often curmudgeonly photographer. ON MONROE'S UBIQUITY: "She's like part of the world. She's like the weather." PHOTOS: Hollywood's Lost Letters ON WHY SHE IS STILL AN ICON: "In the way that Christ represents religion, she represents femininity. The female spirit. She's the girl next door. The American dream girl. She was just gorgeous. She was everything, Funny, beautiful, very sexy, great body, she was clever, a good model. I didn't expect her to be so naturally beautiful. I had expected her more blown up, heavier, much more fake. She was very real. I took to her right away." ON WHETHER HE SAW HER END COMING: "No, I had no inclination. I just thought she was a typical beautiful crazy girl but particularly pretty and a lot of fun." ON HAVING PASSION FOR HIS SUBJECT: "I think I was in love with her before I met her. I would have run away with her. Who wouldn't? If you have a passion, it will do a lot. And I was the right age for those pictures," says Stern, who was around 31 years old at the time. "When the first sitting was over, we were gathering all the photographs together. I figured, well, I didn't get Marilyn but I got the pictures. But it wasn't over because after Vogue saw the first pictures they sent me back to do more. It's never over. Marilyn goes on." Zediva Shut Down Permanently After Settlement With Hollywood Studios

The MPAA has reached a settlement agreement with Zediva that resolves a lawsuit and permanently enjoins the once burgeoning online company from operating any service like the one that made waves earlier this year. Zediva touted itself as aDVD rental service with an interesting model intended to circumvent the red tape that stops other online streaming services like Netflix from renting users the latest releases. In Zediva's model, which it claimed to not need Hollywood approval, customers rent both DVDs and DVD players and remotely control each over the Internet. Hollywood challenged Zediva's on-demand streaming service in a lawsuit filed in April, and argued that Zediva wasn't holding private exhibitions of its movies, but rather infringing its "exclusive rights to perform their works publicly." STORY: Zediva to Appeal Hollywood Injunction to Ninth Circuit In August, a California federal judge accepted this view, and the MPAA won a preliminary injunction against Zediva. At the time, Zediva called the development a "setback for the hundreds of thousands of consumers looking for an alternative to Hollywood-controlled online movie services," and appealed the decision up to the Ninth Circuit. Now, however, Zediva has backed down and has agreed to submit to a permanent injunction. The company is dropping its appeal, paying $1.8 million to resolve the claims, and the matter is now closed. "We are pleased that this case ended with a court order permanently ending Zediva's infringement," says MPAA senior vice president and associate general counsel Dan Robbins. "This result sends a strong message to those who would exploit the studios'works in violation of copyright law, on the Internet or elsewhere, and it is an important victory for themore than two million American men and women whose livelihoods depend on a thriving film and television industry." Box Office Preview: 'Puss in Boots,' 'Adventures of Tintin' Set to Rule the World

Steven Spielberg and longtime compatriot Jeffrey Katzenberg are poised to dominate the worldwide box office this weekend with their two respective family films, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn and Puss in Boots.our editor recommendsSteven Spielberg's 'Adventures of Tintin' Soaring in Overseas DebutPuss in Boots: Film ReviewThe Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn: Film ReviewThe Rum Diary: Film ReviewIn Time: Film ReviewSUNDANCE REVIEW: Like Crazy From Katzenberg's DreamWorks Animation, Puss in Boots is all but set to the win the domestic box-office race as Paramount opens the 3D toon in 3,952 theaters in North America, including 2,827 3D locations. PHOTOS: 'In Time' Premiere Red Carpet Arrivals Box office observers expect the Shrek spin-off to gross in the $35-$39 million range, a healthy number for Halloween weekend, which isn't usually prime territory for a family film. Puss in Boots, which is earning glowing reviews, has a clear shot at besting the top Halloween opening of all time, the $33.6 million earned by Lionsgate's Saw III in 2006. Paramount originally intended to open Puss in Boots, featuring Antonio Banderas in the voice role he made so popular in Shrek, on Nov. 4, but moved up the release by a week to give the pic more breathing room before a deluge of Thanksgiving family titles open. PHOTOS: 'The Adventures of Tintin' U.K. Premiere Blue Carpet Arrivals While Paramount and DreamWorks Animation could forfeit some business this weekend because of Halloween, they believe the movie will have an especially strong second weekend. DWA's Kung Fu Panda 2 opened to $47.7 million earlier this year, while Megamind debuted to $46 million in early November 2011. Tintin, directed by Spielberg, is poised to dominate the international marketplace, where it could open north of $30 million from its first key territories, including Tintin's home country of Belgium. The pic is Spielberg's first 3D film. PHOTOS: Images From Steven Spielberg's 'The Adventures of Tintin' Tintin is the first of two films that Spielberg and Peter Jackson are collaborating on (Jackson will direct the second title). Paramount and Sony are partners on the project and dividing up distribution duties. Because the character Tintin is much more beloved overseas, the film is rolling out there first. It debuts in the U.S. over the Christmas holiday. PHOTOS: Top 15 Grossing Threequels of All Time Tintin began playing in previews earlier this week in Belgium, France and the U.K. before an official opening on Wednesday in the three territories. It has already grossed nearly $9 million, including a record-breaking $4.5 million in France, where it could score the biggest opening of all time after Avatar. The 3D motion-capture movie opens on Friday in a number of other foreign markets. At the domestic box office, two other wide players debut: New Regency's Justin Timberlake-Amanda Seyfried sci-fi thriller In Time and FilmDistrict's Johnny Depp starrer The Rum Diary, based on Hunter S. Thompson's semi-autobiographical novel about his early days as a journalist in Puerto Rico. However, Paramount's Paranormal Activity 3 will likely beat both new entries for No. 2 after opening to a record-breaking $52.6 million last weekend, and grossing $60.5 million through Wednesday. PHOTOS: 'Puss in Boots' Premiere Red Carpet Arrivals Distributed by Fox, In Time is looking at a relatively modest opening in the low teens. The movie, directed by Andrew Niccol, was fully financed and produced by New Regency for roughly $35 million. In Time, set in a society where no one lives beyond the age of 25 unless they can buy time, is understandably tracking best among moviegoers under the age of 25, a demo that has been largely absent at the box office. While critics have noted the film's original storyline, the reviews overall haven't been good. Rum Diary has been drawing better notices, but they are still mixed. FilmDistrict expects the pic to open in the $9-$12 million range, and says it should appeal to both Depp fans as well as followers of Thompson, who turned up in force at various college screenings of the film, including at Columbia University and the University of California at Berkeley. There's a flurry of activity at the specialty box office, including the debut of Roland Emmerich's period Shakespeare drama Anonymous, which opens in 260 theaters. At the 11th hour, based on soft tracking, Sony decided to scale back the release of the film, which had been set to open nationwide. Paramount opens Drake Doremus' Sundance Film Festival favorite Like Crazy in four theaters in NY and Los Angeles. Instructions to Momo (Momo e no tegami)

An "Instructions to Momo" Film Partners presentation of the Production I.G production. Created by Keiko Matsushita, Motoki Mukaichi, Mariko Noguchi, Arimasa Okada. Directed, compiled by Hiroyuki Okura.A woman mourning the dying of her father is visited by three mischievous spirits only she will see in "Instructions to Momo." Marking a dramatic departure from his bloody 1999 debut, "Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade," director Hiroyuki Okiura brings a dash of miracle for this modern-day story, crafting exactly the kind of imaginative family-friendly toon auds expect from Studio Ghibli -- only that one originates from Production I.G, the outfit accountable for the greater adult-skewing "Ghost within the Spend" series. So thoroughly created and made may be the result, "Momo" should find enthusiastic support in anime-friendly marketplaces and homevid. Borrowing many of the elements which make anime classic "My Neighbor Totoro" among Japan's most beloved characters, the film opens having a family's move from Tokyo, japan towards the island of Shio. While her widowed mother has a tendency to adult concerns, 13-year-old Momo occupies herself going through the unfamiliar house and rural surroundings -- an activity complicated through the spirits of three former goblins: beaming giant Iwa, frog-like Kawa and baby-searching Mame. Unlike the benign forest spirits in "Totoro," however, this trio is pure mischief. Using their pressing appetites and nasty practice of stealing keepsakes in the local people, the silly-searching animals are constantly engaging in trouble, with Momo frequently using the blame. Normally, humans wouldn't have the ability to see these spirits, who've been sent previously mentioned to keep an eye on Momo and her mother throughout time it requires her lately deceased father's soul to achieve paradise. Because it works out, this is actually the very first time these three happen to be sent on this type of mission, plus they accidentally made their presence known by entering connection with Momo on the initial descent, permitting for a number of unique adventures round the island. As the supernatural element creates the film's most entertaining sequences, including a thrilling setpiece by which wild boars chase Momo and her crop-raiding buddies with an orchard, the storyline differentiates itself using their company anime choices through its focus on both visual and emotional realism. Director Okiura's nuanced feeling of gesture and body gestures yields such true-to-existence movement, it indicates either extensive use actor-models or even the classic rotoscoping technique Wally Disney accustomed to animate Snow Whitened -- a method further overflowing by placing the experience against detailed, painterly skills. (Nevertheless, auds who've had their anticipation of anime formed by Studio Ghibli fare might be disappointed through the pic's moderate palette and low-key facial expressiveness.) As gorgeous as "Momo" would be to behold, the film's sensitive portrayal of the teen coping with grief proves its most compelling element. Devastated that her final words to her father were spoken in anger, Momo ponders an incomplete letter left in her own father's drawer, wondering what he meant to say. Okiura is really carefully attuned to taking the girl's experience of a geniune method in which "Momo" appears as prone to interest child researchers because it is to entertain actual children. Using its complex characterizations and multiple story lines, the toon rivals mature live-action drama. Nevertheless, the animation medium is important to the unique surreal touches -- particularly the stunning climactic sequence, which rivals even "Spirited Away" as Momo's mother falls ill and also the spirits must intervene towards saving her existence.Camera (color, HD), Koji Tanaka editor, Junichi Uematsu music, Mina Kubota art director, Hiroshi Ono seem (Dolby Digital), Kazuhiro Wakabayashi animation director, Naoko Kusumi. Examined at Toronto Film Festival (TIFF Kids), Sept. 15, 2011. (Also in Busan, Hawaii film festivals.) Running time: 120 MIN. Contact Peter Debruge at peter.debruge@variety.com

Disney's The Lone Ranger set to ride back into action

It wasn't so long ago that we were reporting that Disney had pulled the plug on the ambitious new movie version of The Lone Ranger. Now, Deadline are reporting that the problems have been all but resolved at the studio, and an official announcement is expected next week. The key players - Johnny Depp as Tonto, Armie Hammer as the masked hero and Ruth Wilson (Luther) as the female lead - are expected to be back, and we're hoping Helena Bonham Carter will return, too. While it seemed strange that a project from the Pirates Of The Caribbean power-combo of Depp, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski could ever be shelved, the primary concern was the budget, which was edging north of $250m.Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski have apparently chipped that figure down to a mere $215m.Deadline suggests the disappointing performance of this summer's western-themed Cowboys & Aliens could have caused Disney's hesitance. The vintage property still sounds like a slightly risky proposition, but there's always the underlying hope that Depp, Verbinski and Bruckheimer could recapture the spirit of the first Pirates, with plenty of laughs, adventure and old-fashioned swashbuckling. It's not yet clear if The Lone Ranger is still expected to hit its original December 2012 release date.

Morgan Freeman Tells CNN's Piers Morgan That Tea Party Is Racist

Morgan Freeman described the Tea Party as having a racist agenda in its opposition of President Barack Obama in an interview on CNN's Piers Morgan scheduled to air Friday night. Morgan asked Freeman about Obama's presidency and the positive or negative effect it has had on the alleviation of racism in America. Freeman answered that it had made things worse. PHOTOS: Actors Who've Played Politicians The Tea Party's "stated policy, publicly stated, is to do whatever it takes to see to it that Obama only serves on term term," Freeman said. "What's, what does that, what underlines that? Screw the country. We're going to do whatever we do to get this black man, we can, we're going to do whatever we can to get this black man outta here." VIDEO: Matt Damon Slams Tea Party, Republicans for Handling of Debt Ceiling Crisis Morgan played devil's advocate with Freeman, who continued, "It just shows the weak, dark, underside of America. We're supposed to be better than that. We really are. That's why all those people were in tears when Obama was elected president. 'Ah, look at what we are. Look at how, this is America.' You know? And then it just sort of started turning because these people surfaced like stirring up muddy water." Morgan suggested that people would not like to see Obama deliver a "metaphorical bloody nose" to his opponents. Freeman agreed. "Now you see how hard he's tried and how hard they have fought against him," Freeman said. Related Topics Barack Obama Morgan Freeman Piers Morgan

Action Drama From Frank Spotnitz Is A Go At Cinemax, Melissa George To Star

EXCLUSIVE: Melissa George has been tapped as the lead in the BBC-Cinemax spy thriller series Nemesis aka Morton, which was created by former X-Files executive producer Frank Spotnitz. BBC One commissioned eight episodes of the project back in January, with Cinemax recently coming on board. Cinemax will co-produce Nemesis with BBC and the UK’s Shine-owned production company Kudos Film and Television, in association with Big Light. In the vein of Bourne Identity, Nemesis is a suspense thriller set in the world of international espionage. It centers on a highly skilled operative (George) for an elite private intelligence firm who survives an attempt on her life that might have been orchestrated by members of her own team. Once she returns to the firm, she must perform her secretive duties without knowing who to trust and who wants her dead. In addition to writing, Spotnitz is executive producing Nemesis with Kudos’ Stephen Garrett, Jane Featherstone and Alison Jackson. S.J. Clarkson will direct the first two episodes of the series, which will start production this fall in Europe and North Africa. A show about a butt-kicking female spy is a familiar territory for George, who co-starred on ABC’s Alias. She recently wrapped A&E’s upcoming miniseries Bag of Bones, based on Stephen King’s book, in which she co-stars opposite Pierce Brosnan. George, repped by ICM, UK agent Vic Murray and 3 Arts, also co-starred on the drama series In Treatment, which aired on Cinemax’s sister network HBO and earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Nemesis is Spotnitz’s second Cinemax series. He also co-wrote with British TV writer Richard Zadjlic the action drama Strike Back, Cinemax’s first original primetime series, which launched last month.

Acad cracks down on Oscar campaigns

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced new rules governing the marketing of Oscar contenders, banning Academy members and nominees from certain non-screening events after nominations and adding social media to the realm of restricted speech -- while at the same time removing obstacles to screenings with filmmakers' live participation. These campaign regulations play an important role in protecting the integrity of the Academy Awards process and the distinction of the Oscar," said Academy President Tom Sherak. "Above all, we want Academy members to see movies as they were meant to be seen, in a theatrical setting."Perhaps to that end, voters will be allowed to attend screenings hosted specifically for Academy members with panels and filmmaker Q&A -- as well as catered receptions -- so long as they take place before the nominations. In the past, filmmakers and cast were forbidden (as were receptions with food and drink) at any screening held for voters, no matter the time of year. However, any individual filmmaker will only be allowed to appear at two Academy screenings after nominations, which will be announced January 24, 2012.This will also be the first year that studios will be allowed to digitally distribute screeners to Academy members, provided those copies comply with established rules for discs. But perhaps the most pointed change was directed at parties: From nominations to the close of polls, both Academy members and nominees are nixed from any non-screening event that "promotes or honors a nominated movie or individual nominee." That rule would presumably have applied to several high-profile events held last year (though not Sony's "Social Network" DVD-release party at Spago, which was well-attended by filmmakers and cast but took place before the nominations). The only exceptions: Academy-sanctioned events and awards ceremonies presented by various orgs like guilds and critics' associations. And add social media to the list of places where both bad-mouthing and tubthumping are, as they've always been, verboten. Specific penalties include a one-year suspension for first-time violations and expulsion for subsequent violations for members.Oscar's new rulesAmong the new campaign rules are crackdowns on receptions and negative campaigning.ScreeningsPrior nominations, screenings presented by or funded by film companies may be followed by a Q&A session by persons associated with the film. Such screenings may be preceded or followed by a reception that includes food and beverage. After nominations are announced, any one person associated with a film, nominee or not, may not participate in more than two screenings that include Q&A sessions. Additionally, during this time period, screenings of nominated films (with or without Q&A sessions) may not include food and/or beverage. After nominations are announced, no Academy member may be listed as a "host" of a screening in any way unless that member is directly associated with the film. ScreenersScreeners may also be distributed to members digitally, via download or streaming, so long as the delivery of those motion pictures conforms to all other provisions of these RegulationsMusicBefore nominations are announced, CDs of eligible scores may be sent to members of the Music Branch only. No CDs of songs may be sent to any Academy member before nominations are announced. After nominations are announced, CDs of nominated scores and songs may be sent to any Academy member. Non-Screening EventsAfter nominations are announced, no member may be invited to or attend any event, including breakfasts, lunches, dinners, parties and receptions, that in any way promotes or honors a nominated film, a nominee, or is attended by a nominee or anyone with a direct association with a nominated film, except as permitted under Rule 1. These regulations apply to nominees as well as Academy members, and nominees are similarly prohibited from attending such events.Excluded from this prohibition are sanctioned events and awards ceremonies presented by the various guilds, critics groups and other organizations.References to Other Nominees. Ads, mailings, websites, social media (e.g., Facebook and Twitter) or any other forms of public communication by anyone directly associated with an eligible film attempting to promote a particular film or achievement by casting a negative or derogatory light on a competing film or achievement will not be tolerated. In particular, any tactic that singles out "the competition" by name or title is expressly forbidden. Academy members that violate this Rule 16 will be subject to a one-year suspension of membership for first-time violations, and expulsion for any subsequent violations.Complete rules can be found at the Academy's website Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Media Privileges Capital Closes $350 Million Turning Credit Facility Over 5 Years

BREAKING: Media Privileges Capital partners Modi Wiczyk and Asif Satchu have closed a five-year $350 million turning credit facility with funding supplied by several banks brought by JPMorgan Chase, Comerica, Bank of America, SunTrust and Union Bank. The syndicate includes East West Bank, Wells Fargo, Bank Leumi and City National Bank. The funds will be employed to finance MRC’s feature and tv productions. MRC’s last credit facility seemed to be $350 million over 3 years, guaranteed in 2008 at the time from the economic recession, from the consortium of banks that incorporated JPMorgan Chase and Comerica. MRC transformed its feature structure from creating pictures it licensed for distribution to galleries, (it notoriously designed a $42.5 million deal for Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat followup Bruno with Universal for U.S. and British speaking areas) to really financing many of them via a five-year distribution cope with Universal Pictures. That studio has turned into a prime outlet for MRC fare, certification the Neill Blomkamp-directed advanced film Elysium, which stars Matt Damon, Jodie Promote and Sharlto Copley. It had been the 2nd MRC film for Damon, who starred with Emily Blunt within the Universal Pictures-distributed The Adjustment Bureau, which made $128 million worldwide. MRC can also be in production on Ted, the feature pointing debut of Family Guy creatort Seth MacFarlane that stars Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis and you'll be launched by Universal. MRC has two more projects with Blomkamp and 2 with Fincher, amongst others. MRC helps make the situation by situation decision if the productions are licensed to galleries or come under its new distribution deal at Universal. MRC, following a unsuccessful foray that involved programming the Sunday evening selection for that CW Network, is participating in the little screen front. MRC has got the Ough Gervais Show on Cinemax, and it is developing series including the CBS sitcom How to become a Gentleman with Entourage’s Kevin Dillon, along with a serialized political drama for Netflix that's being created by David Fincher and stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. In most cases, MRC makes deals that grant talent in the first floor an possession stake within the film or TV project. “In the unpredictable atmosphere from the current economy, this oversubscribed facility is validation from your financial partners and let us continue growing and strengthening our brand,” stated Erika Hindle, who became a member of at MRC CFO within the summer time after previous stints at Relativity Media and Overture. A number of MRC’s recent features, in the Box towards the M. Evening Shyamalan-created Demon and also the Robert Rodriguez-directed Shorts, have fallen far lacking box office success. Still, David Shaheen, the Controlling Director of JPMorgan Chase’s Entertainment Industries Group, stated that MRC remains a lucrative wager for that bank. “At a period when many banking institutions have rethought their support of entertainment qualities, we still develop our partnership with Media Privileges Capital,” Shaheen stated inside a statement. “MRC’s consistent profitability from project to project, whether in film or television, firmly cements our lengthy-standing financial relationship together. We're excited to take part in the ongoing success of the business efforts.”
