Im going to college this fall, and would love to join at least a
couple bands, and hopefully record some material! Id love to play in a
bands anything from punk, hip hop, indie, rock, or electricona.
I can play both fretless, fretted, and upright bass (though i do not
own my own upright bass), and can play competantly with fingers,
picks, or slap n pop.
Im not the best slap and pop guy, but I almost never use slap and pop,
and the groups i would be interested in joining would probably rarely
use it. I can slapnpop fairly well, (for example one of my favorite
slapnpop songs to play is Aeroplane by the red hot chilli peppers)
just not nearly as well as fingers or pick.
Im not great at reading music but i know a LOT of music theory and
listen to music from all genres.
Im also not very good at singing while i play bass. I can song while i
play strumming instruments (such as rhythm guitar or strumming a
mandolin) but not as well on bass.
I can also play guitar (acoustic and electric), mandolin, a little
piano, and ukulele. :D.
So my basic question is: assuming i had chemistry with the other band
members, would this be enough to get me into a
semi-professional/professional group? Or would they be looking for a
bassist who is more refined at all styles (including slapnpop) and who
can sing well while playing? I mean, obviously, if i just fit the band
perfectly, they might pick me regardless of my lackings in a few
areas, but are bands looking for much more than the abilities i listed
above?
